MHP and Volkswagen jointly win the Red Dot Design Award

User Centered Design as a strategy

Wolfsburg – The MHP design experts, in cooperation with Volkswagen AG, have won the Red Dot Design Award for the "GroupUI" design system. A comprehensive design strategy If you compare individual digital applications in a business context, you will quickly note how interactive patterns, functions and symbols differ. In most cases, each application follows its own operating patterns, which results in many breaks within the employee experience every day. The increasing effects of the digital employee experience on employee satisfaction can be observed with career starters in particular. Ergonomics - which has long been a focus in production – is also becoming relevant for software. With GroupUI, uniform operating patterns are used in the specialist departments and the user experience is improved across the board as an integrated employee experience. Here, usual interactions from the private sphere are integrated into everyday professional life, irrespective of which department an employee belongs to. Using the synergies of the project landscape Many projects understand design as a concluding phase in the form of a "styling". With GroupUI and the GroupUI project procedure, however, projects are enabled to focus on user requirements and to develop software with real added value. With the establishing of uniform standards, users ultimately benefit from good software ergonomics with standardized use and integrated employee experiences. "With the library, we want to introduce a new design and front-end standard at Volkswagen, which will make operation for the user much more intuitive, uniform and convenient," explains Thorsten Jankowski, UX Lead at Volkswagen AG. The design system is growing as an "inhouse open source" - the more projects using it and actively designing it in future, the greater the synergies and efficiency. Considerable financial savings can thus be achieved, as effort for project-specific styleguide interpretations is eliminated. Dr. Jan Wehinger, Partner at MHP: "For VW, it was important that a scalable library be created that can be used across the Group and that ensures intuitive use. If, for example, a new software is used in a company department, the catalog is automatically expanded with new components and functions. The great advantage here is that, in turn, other designers and developers have access to them and can use them for their projects." At present, the Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda brands are integrated – Porsche and other brands are to follow. Moritz Papenfuß, Topic Manager for Design at MHP: "Designing design – we understand the ability to design as corporate competence. With GroupUI, we have managed to change the role of design and designers in the organization. A design process that is initiated early on can develop in the projects and is not reduced to styling. Business, technology and design speak a single language in the projects." Design as a strategic focus at MHP We understand design as an elementary link between IT and corporate strategy. Design and strategy consultation by MHP means that we work with a strong focus on the organizational transformation. Here, we continually ask ourselves the question of who we are developing a solution for and what actually moves the people behind a problem definition. The Red Dot Design Award is presented once a year in three categories (Product Design, Brands & Communication Design, and Design Concept). It goes to innovative developments of designers, companies or universities. In total, the jury had evaluated almost 8700 international competition entries. The best entries are awarded a Red Dot by an independent jury. Further information can be found at
