Driverless transport systems (DTS), or automated guided vehicles (AGVs), are playing an important role in production automation. Self-driving vehicles equipped with software and suitable sensors automatically perform a large number of transport tasks. Processes can therefore be implemented more efficiently while the burden on employees is reduced. Some companies have now already recognized the advantages of DTS and AGVs, and have opted accordingly to use them. A trend report by Inform from 2020/2021 shows that the use of DTS in in-house logistics has doubled within seven years. This is also due to the ongoing development of DTS which has reduced the costs for self-driving vehicles. However, many companies are uncertain whether extensive use of DTS is worthwhile. This is also due, for example, to the fact that profitability analyses for DTS are very elaborate and that there is a lack of experience in implementing and using possible assessment methods.

In order to obtain an overall assessment of the profitability of DTS in the most reasonable time frame, MHP has developed a calculation model which takes account of all cost factors and calculation parameters. Financial KPIs (key performance indicators) can also be calculated for the cost-effectiveness analysis in order to make a safe investment decision.

In our MHPMHPDeepDive "Investment in driverless transport systems (DTS)" we will first describe the advantages and disadvantages of DTS. We will analyze the challenges when performing a cost-effectiveness analysis and will explain what parameters have to be considered. You will also learn how a well-founded and quick cost-effectiveness analysis can be performed based on the MHP calculation model.

What awaits you in our MHPDeepDive:

  • We will show the advantages and disadvantages of DTS.
  • We will analyze the challenges when performing a cost-effectiveness analysis of DTS and will explain what parameters are essential.
  • You will learn how a well-founded and quick cost-effectiveness analysis for DTS can be performed based on the MHP calculation model.
