White Paper on New Work

Much more than hype

Ludwigsburg – The "new" always promises progress, and for that reason alone it is an important guiding star in the business context. In any event, that explains the inflationary use of terms that in some way express novelty. "New Work" could easily be included in the long list of such buzz words. However, this would not do justice to the idea – this conviction is formulated by the management and IT consulting company MHP in a current White Paper.

For in actual fact, "New Work" is anything but hype. The idea of "New Work" was developed by the Austrian-American social philosopher Frithjof Bergmann already in the 1970s and 1980s. Then as now, society was facing a huge upheaval. Against this background, Bergmann came to the conclusion that work would have to undergo a complete rethink. In this connection, there are two essential aspects:

  • The realization of a working environment in which people like to work and can achieve great things
  • The perception of responsibility on the part of companies towards humans and the environment

Operationalization along five dimensions

To ensure that companies can implement the "New Work" idea for themselves, MHP has conceived a transformation model that provides a framework for changes in five dimensions:

1. Working spaces and working worlds

2. Tools and technologies

3. Organization and structure

4. Humans and culture

5. Values

These dimensions are described in greater detail in MHP's White Paper on "New Work". It is thus shown what is important in terms of a new kind of work and for what reasons, and how a change can be brought about. Companies can thus gain an initial overview of the relevant fields of action.

However, it only makes sense to deal with this issue if those responsible are willing to make fundamental changes.
