Digitalization in industry is inextricably linked to the concept of the smart factory – spectacularly staged with drones and robots in futuristic looking production plants. A great deal has actually happened in the last few years. Especially in regard to the shop floor. Under the label of Industry 4.0, machines and systems have been equipped and interlinked with new technology while the number of automated guided vehicles (AGV) and robots has increased. The emphasis must now be shifted to the top floor to ensure that this progress towards the smart factory continues.
